Curriculum Vitae
Izzy Hart (b. 2003, Wiltshire, UK) graduated First Class with Honours with a BA (Hons) in Painting and Drawing from UON in 2025 and intends to go on to study an MA. Hart engages with materiality, objecthood, and the painted mark, producing radically abstract works that walk the line between physical and metaphysical. She is deeply invested in academic writing and is currently researching how material qualities contribute to meaningfulness in contemporary abstract painting. She has exhibited internationally.
Statement
My practice is concerned with exploring radical notions of abstraction that walk the line between physical and metaphysical. My work investigates materiality, objecthood, and the painted mark, considering how these elements converge and the resulting conversation with a language of painterly gesture residing in a realm outside of imagery.

Grounded in a contemporary art history informed by the likes of Robert Ryman, Jason Martin and Ad Reinhardt, the development of my practice has been shaped by an emphasis on physical processes, painterly facture, and the monochrome. This is supported by critical enquiry into how substances can impart meaning, engaging with scholarly concepts such as Donald Kuspit's notion of alchemy in painting and how these link to transcendental experience.

Having experienced a complete loss of faith in imagery, my works operate within a realm of absolute abstraction, turning to underscore the importance of the medium itself as subject matter and question the metaphysical implications of a substance imbued with spirit through mark-making. Such a strong emphasis on surface and physicality produces paintings with a direct quality, which when coupled with indirect, mechanical processes such as airbrushing, instils the resulting works with a contradictory strangeness between overt surface materiality and photographic flatness. The tensions of presence and absence between these juxtaposing components speak to a kind of experiential transcendence, accessing the metaphysical through the resolutely physical.
